October 29th 2004 - The old saying is defense wins championships. On a night the offense would struggle Eastbrook's defense came up huge.
The clash between two unbeaten teams was a defensive struggle for a half. Winschester had the first chance to score moving the ball inside the Eastbrook 20 yard line. A dropped pass in the endzone would be the closest the Falcons would get.
Eastbrook would take over on downs. On the first play the Panthers would fumble the ball giving it back to the Falcons on the 15 yard-line. Four plays later the Panther defense would stand up again and turn the Falcons away.
Zach Tuterow would finally put the Panthers on the board in the second quarter on an option keep from 7-yards out. The extra point would make it 7-0 at the half.
With the offense still struggling the defense would come up with the big play. A hit on the quarterback would force a bad pitch scooped up by Adam Short and returned 36-yards for a touchdown making it 14-0.
After another stop Zach Tuterow would find Jason Poe behind the Falcon secondary for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
On the ensuing kickoff Jed Puckett would recover a short squibb kick. Eight plays later Poe would take it off tackle for a 28-0 lead.
Kyle Kirkpatrick would finish the scoring off with a 40-yard touchdown run making the final score 35-0.
The story of the night was definitely the defense. In a year in which the offense has struggled at times the defense has led the way for the Panthers. The Panthers had a big challenge in stopping the state's 8th leading rusher. The Panthers held him below 50 yards on the night.
The win moves the Panthers to the sectional finals. Eastbrook will travel to a resurgent Bluffton for the final. |
