| Eastbrook Defeats Western |
|
August 28th 2009 - Three games of heartbreak came to an end with a 28-7 win over Western. Eastbrook and Western renewed an old MIC rival three years. In each game Western pulled out a tough win by a combined 7 points. Eastbrook looked to get off to a fast start taking the opening kick. It would only take Eastbrook 4 plays to go up 7-0. Max Widmyer would finish the drive with a 36-yard run around the end. Eastbrook’s special teams would get another chance to shine. Western would be forced to punt on its first possession. Widmyer again would be the star racing 70-yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 score. Eastbrook would have chance to break the game open but the Western defense would rise to the occasion and keep their team in the game. Western would make the score 14-7 on a long 10 play drive that started at their own 16-yard line. Indy Mathew would finish the drive from 16-yards out. That is how the teams would go into the half. The score would stay 14-7 until late in the third quarter. Eastbrook’s punt team would pin Western on the 1 yard line. Cody Thompson covered a fumble in the end zone to put Eastbrook up 20-7. Colton Benedict would finish Western off early in the fourth quarter on a 15 yard run. He would also add the conversion making the final score 28-7. Eastbrook’s defense did a solid job holding down the Western rushing attack holding them to 31 total yards in the second half and just 114 yards for the game. The linebacking core of Caleb Hemmick, Boone Searles, and Gavin Pearson lead the way defensively. Each registered double digits in tackles. Cody Thompson and Jackson Bratcher also turned in big games for Eastbrook. Thompson recovered his second fumble of the season. Next week opens up the conference schedule. Eastbrook will open with county rival Oak Hill who will enter the game 0-2.
