| Panther Claim Sectional 19 Crown |
|
November 6th 2009 - Eastbrook used the big play on offense scoring 5 touchdowns on runs longer than 48 yards and used a stout defense to down Bellmont the defending class 3A champions 34-0. The win brought Eastbrook their first 3A sectional championship. The first quarter looked nothing like the final score for the Panthers. Belmont ran 20 plays in the first quarter to Eastbrook’s 3. Bellmont took their second possession all the way to the Eastbrook 16 yard line before the Panthers would stop them short on 4th down. One play later Colton Benedict would race around the end 84 yards to put Eastbrook up 7-0. The offense would strike big again on its next possession. Jeremy Porter-Jones would continue his big playoff performance breaking lose up the middle for a 65 yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead. The big play in the half would come just before halftime. Bellmont had taken the ball down inside the Eastbrook 30 yard line. With just a minute to go Bellmont called a time out. The Braves came out in a new formation which confused the Panthers briefly. Just as the ball was snapped Eastbrook linebacker Caleb Hemmick read the play racing across the field and tipping an interception to himself denying the Braves from scoring before the half. Eastbrook seized all momentum from that point. Looking to put the game away early Eastbrook received the kick after the half. It would only take one play for Max Widmeyer to go 76 yards and a 21-0 lead. Eastbrook’s defense would have more than enough cushion from that point. The defense behind a dominating effort from Hemmick would hold the Braves to just 50 second half yards. Hemmick would register 17 tackles for the game. Widmeyer and Benedict would add two more touchdowns to finish the scoring and make the final score 34-0. The Panthers had all three backs rush for over 150 yards while the offense racked up 472 yards on the ground. Porter-Jones led the way with 172 yards. Defensively the Panthers were led by Hemmick with 17 stops and 2 sacks. Matt Shonkwiler was close behind with 11 tackles and 2 sacks. It was a fantastic team effort against a very good offensive team. The meat grinder continues for the Panthers. The Panthers will play #2 ranked and undefeated West Lafayette (12-0) in the regional. West Lafayette defeated Frankfort 54-22. The game will be held at Eastbrook.
