Panther finish off Undefeated Season
October 16th 2009 -

In a week that provided plenty of concern Eastbrook put together a solid 1st and 3rd quarter on offense to claim a 55-7 victory over Mississinewa and its 4th undefeated regular season.

The week leading up to the game was anything but normal.  The flu bug ran through the locker room like we have never seen.  Monday’s JV game was canceled due to the lack of healthy players.  The rest of the week saw 10-15 players miss practice each day because of the bug.

The Panthers were able to start the game quickly.  After the defense held for a three and out the offense responded quickly taking just 4 plays to cover 48 yards.  Colton Benedict would put the first of two scores up to make the score 7-0.

The defense would add the next score.  Caleb Hemmick would force a fumble on a blitz that would be scooped by Jordan Hatfield and run back 45 yards for a 14-0 lead.

Tanner Day would close the first quarter scoring with a one yard plunge into the endzone.  A missed extra point would make the score 20-0 after the 1st quarter.

The Panther defense was a major contributor in the first quarter holding Mississinewa to -8 yards of offense on four possessions.

The second quarter would start out positive before the Panthers would look like a team that had not practiced much that week.  Benedict would add his second score to make it 26-0.

The rest of the second quarter was pretty sloppy.  Two fumbles and an interception would lead to the Indian score.  Travis Durham would scoop one of the fumbles and return in for a touchdown.

The Panthers would right the ship in the third quarter putting together three scores.  Max Widmeyer would start things off taking the second play of the third 70-yards for a score.  On Eastbrook’s next possession Day would find Boone Searles for the loan passing touchdown of the game.  Jeremiah Carder would finish things off for the offense at the end of the 3rd quarter making the score 47-7.

The final score of the evening would come from the defense.  Josh Stevens would have a fumble pop right into his hands.  He would return it for his first varsity touchdown.

The offense turned in an ok night.  The defense was very good.  The Panthers held Mississinewa to negative yards on 7 of 16 possessions while recovering 4 fumbles.  Cody Thompson lead 3 Panthers in double digit tackles with 11 stops.  Hemmick and Bratcher turned in another solid night with 10 tackles each.

The win gave the Panthers an outright CIC title.  They also defeated each of the Grant 4 teams and remained undefeated.

The Panthers focus will now turn to tournament play.  They will play at Leo who is 8-1 losing their only game to 6th ranked Norwell back in the first game of the season.
