Panthers Win Opener
August 21st 2009 -

It was not pretty but Eastbrook opened the season with a 26-18 win over South Adams.

Eastbrook struggled most of the first half against a determined South Adams team.  Dropped passes and costly penalties put the Panther offense in tough situations much of the first half.  Eastbrook was held without a first down until late in the first half.

South Adams started the first half controlling the ball with a balanced attack.  The Panthers managed to stay in the game by forcing two fumbles inside of its own territory.  The Starfires broke through first as Nick Teeter found Roman Smith for a 14 yard scoring strike and a 6-0 lead.

Eastbrook would answer the score minutes later.  Jeremy Porter-Jones would break free up the middle and score his first touchdown from 18 yards out.

The Panthers would seize control of the game right after the half.  Tanner Day would sneak in from the 2 yard line for a 13- 6 lead.  The score was set up on a big run from Colton Benedict.

The next possession would see Porter-Jones scamper in from 4-yards out this time to make the score 20-6.

Eastbrook looked to be taking control of the game when the mistakes crept back in slowing the Panther offense.

The fourth quarter would see South Adams put together a big comeback attempt.  Down 14 Teeter would only need one play to find Smith for a 75 yard strike narrowing the gap to 8.

On the next possession Teeter would find Smith again this time from 18 yards away drawing the Starfires to within 2 points.

Eastbrook would answer that score putting together a 5 minute 11 play drive.  Max Widmyer would finish the drive making the score 26-18.  A missed extra point would keep the game interesting.

South Adams would take the kickoff back to the 50 yard line with 36 seconds left.  South Adams would push to the 21-yard line before the clock would run out.

Colton Benedict would lead the Panthers with 118 yards on the ground.  He was closely followed by Porter-Jones with 97yard and two touchdowns.

The Panthers are 1-0 on the season and will next play Western.  Western opened their season with a 21-3 loss to Frankfort.  The game will be at Eastbrook.
