Panthers Win Sectional Opener
October 24th 2008 -

Eastbrook opened sectional play with a convincing 42-0 win over Blackford.

Playing a team for the second time in a season can be a difficult task.  The Panthers knew that Blackford had revenge on its mind.  Eastbrook shut the door on those thoughts quickly Friday night.

The script stayed the same for the Panthers.  Play great defense and pound the ball on offense.

Eastbrook started the game with the ball.  Colton Benedict gave the Panthers the lead from 37 yards out to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.  The big play of the series and possibly the game came on a 4th and 1 play near midfield.  That big pick seemed to give the Panthers confidence and take some of the air out of the Bruins.

Eastbrook’s defense would do a great job setting up the offense the rest of the half.  Craig Martin would take the next score in from 2 yards.  That was set up on a Dereck Case to Martin pass.

Jeremy Porter-Jones would get his first touchdown to put Eastbrook up 21-0 with a 56 yard run.

Kelsey Grindle would help set up the fourth score taking a fumble down the sideline before being tripped up at the 19 yard line.  Kurtis Brooksher would finish the drive off from 2 yards out.

Porter-Jones would finish the first half with his second touchdown run from 16 yards.  That made the half time score 35-0.

Eastbrook would put one more score on the board early in the third quarter.  Case ran in from 3yards out for the final margin of 42-0.

The second team did a great job holding on to the shutout.  The Panther defense was led by Caleb Hemmick with 8 tackles and 1 for a loss.  Matt Shonkwiler followed close behind with 6 tackles and 3 for loss.  Eight Panthers recorded at least 4 stops.

The win brings Eastbrook’s record to 8-2.  Next up for Eastbrook will be 2nd ranked West Lafayette.
